Big Magic

by Elizabeth Gilbert

Gilbert's book on creative living is about courage, permission, persistence and trust, told in short sections with a light touch. It argues that creativity is for everyone, that fear can come along but not drive, and that you should not demand your art pay the bills. It is warm, a little whimsical, and genuinely encouraging.

Read it if…

you want to make things and have been waiting for permission or inspiration.

Skip it if…

you want technique or craft; this is about the inner life of a maker.

Three things you will actually use

  1. Let fear ride along; it does not get the wheel.
  2. Do not ask your creativity to support you financially.
  3. Done is better than good.

Do this first

Begin the project you have been afraid of, badly, today, for twenty minutes.

Our verdict

Generous and light; a good companion for the frightened beginner.
