Braving the Wilderness

by Brené Brown

Brown's book on belonging: true belonging requires standing alone when necessary, and the four practices, people are hard to hate close up, speak truth to BS with civility, hold hands with strangers, strong back soft front wild heart. It is shorter and more political than her others, written for a polarized moment.

Read it if…

you feel you do not fit anywhere and have been shrinking to fit.

Skip it if…

you want her more practical books; this is reflective and short.

Three things you will actually use

  1. Move in closer to people you disagree with.
  2. Belong to yourself first.
  3. Hold both strength and openness.

Do this first

Have one real conversation this week with someone whose views you dislike, in person.

Our verdict

Brief and timely; less practical, still worthwhile.
