Financial Peace

by Dave Ramsey

Ramsey's original book, from the bankruptcy that started his career: get out of debt, build an emergency fund, live on a budget, avoid credit, give generously. The investing advice (expect twelve percent) is optimistic and the anti-credit stance absolute, but for people drowning in debt the plan's simplicity and emotional clarity work.

Read it if…

you are in debt and need a simple, strict plan with a strong voice behind it.

Skip it if…

you are already debt-free and optimizing; the math advice is simplistic.

Three things you will actually use

  1. Debt is the obstacle; remove it first.
  2. Budget every dollar before the month begins.
  3. Behavior matters more than math in personal finance.

Do this first

Write every debt smallest to largest and attack the smallest with everything extra this month.

Our verdict

Simple, strict, effective for the indebted.
