Learned Optimism
by Martin E. P. Seligman
Seligman's research on explanatory style: pessimists see bad events as permanent, pervasive and personal, optimists do not, and the style can be learned by disputing automatic thoughts. The ABCDE method is practical and grounded in cognitive therapy. The book is older and dense in places; the core method is sound.
Read it if…
you default to pessimism and want a trainable alternative that is not naive.
Skip it if…
you want a light read; the book is substantive.
Three things you will actually use
- Notice the three Ps in your explanations.
- Dispute; argue with yourself as a lawyer would.
- Use flexible optimism; pessimism has its place in high-stakes planning.
Do this first
Catch one pessimistic explanation today and dispute it with evidence, as you would a rival's claim.
Our verdict
Foundational and practical; the original learned-optimism manual.
