Lost Connections

by Johann Hari

Hari's argument that depression and anxiety are largely responses to disconnection: from meaningful work, other people, values, nature, status and a hopeful future, with reconnection as the response. The science is contested in places and the critique of purely chemical explanations overreaches, but the chapters on work and community are worth the read.

Read it if…

you want a social rather than purely medical lens on low mood, read critically.

Skip it if…

you want clinical guidance; this is journalism and argument, not treatment advice.

Three things you will actually use

  1. Disconnection has many sources; name yours.
  2. Community is protective.
  3. Reconnection is work, not a pill or a platitude.

Do this first

Read the chapter on meaningful work and name one disconnection you can act on this month.

Our verdict
