The 4-Hour Body

by Timothy Ferriss

Ferriss' self-experiments on fat loss (the slow-carb diet), muscle gain, sleep, sex and endurance, presented as a choose-your-own-adventure of minimum effective doses. Some of it is well supported, some is one man's n-of-one, and he says so. The slow-carb chapters are the most widely used and the sleep and injury chapters the most uneven.

Read it if…

you like self-experimentation and want a menu of protocols to test.

Skip it if…

you want consensus medical advice; this is explicitly not that.

Three things you will actually use

  1. Measure before you change anything.
  2. Find the minimum effective dose.
  3. Your body is an experiment of one; test, do not assume.

Do this first

Try the slow-carb rules for two weeks and measure, not guess, the result.

Our verdict

Uneven, interesting, measure everything.
