The 4-Hour Chef

by Timothy Ferriss

Ostensibly a cookbook, actually Ferriss' manual on accelerated learning using cooking as the case study: deconstruction, selection, sequencing, stakes, plus wilderness, hunting and a professional kitchen. It is sprawling and self-indulgent and the meta-learning section is the most useful thing in it.

Read it if…

you want a method for learning any skill fast, and do not mind it arriving as a cookbook.

Skip it if…

you want a cookbook; it is not a good one.

Three things you will actually use

  1. Deconstruct the skill into its smallest units.
  2. Select the twenty percent that gives eighty percent.
  3. Add stakes to guarantee practice.

Do this first

Read the meta-learning section and apply DiSSS to one skill you have been avoiding.

Our verdict

Sprawling; the learning method is the prize.
