The 5 Levels of Leadership
by John C. Maxwell
Maxwell's framework: position (people follow because they must), permission (because they want to), production (because of what you have done), people development (because of what you have done for them), pinnacle (because of who you are). Each level has beliefs, upsides, downsides and steps to the next. It is his clearest and most structured book.
Read it if…
you want a map of leadership growth and an honest read on where you are.
Skip it if…
you dislike Maxwell's style; this has less of it than most, but some.
Three things you will actually use
- Position is the floor, not the ceiling.
- Relationships before results; results before development.
- You are at different levels with different people.
Do this first
Ask three people who report to you which level they follow you at, and believe them.
Our verdict
Clear framework; his most useful.
