The Happiest Baby on the Block

by Harvey Karp

Karp's five S's for calming newborns, swaddle, side, shush, swing, suck, based on the idea of a 'fourth trimester' in which babies need womb-like conditions. The method works for a great many crying babies and the explanation is clear. The book is longer than the method needs; the DVD or a summary gets you there faster.

Read it if…

you have a newborn who cries and you are desperate.

Skip it if…

your baby is past four months; the method fades then.

Three things you will actually use

  1. Newborns need womb conditions; recreate them.
  2. Do the S's together and vigorously.
  3. Crying peaks around six weeks and improves.

Do this first

Practice the swaddle and the shush while the baby is calm, so you can do them at 3 a.m.

Our verdict

Effective method, padded book.
