The Happiness Project

by Gretchen Rubin

Rubin spent a year testing happiness advice month by month: energy, marriage, work, money, mindfulness, friends. The memoir format makes the research digestible and her resolutions, go to sleep earlier, sing in the morning, don't expect praise, are small and doable. It is a cheerful, well-organized template for designing your own project.

Read it if…

you want a structured, month-by-month way to try happiness research on your own life.

Skip it if…

you dislike domestic memoir; the author's life is the lab.

Three things you will actually use

  1. Make resolutions concrete and trackable.
  2. Act the way you want to feel.
  3. Tackle one area a month, not everything at once.

Do this first

Pick one area for next month and write three concrete resolutions you can check off daily.

Our verdict

Practical and warm; a template more than a theory.
