The Kybalion

by Three Initiates

A 1908 text of 'Hermetic philosophy' setting out seven principles: mentalism, correspondence, vibration, polarity, rhythm, cause and effect, gender. It is occult rather than self-help, and it is the hidden source of a great deal of modern mindset language, including 'as above, so below' and 'everything vibrates'.

Read it if…

you want to know where the vocabulary of the mindset industry came from.

Skip it if…

you want anything testable.

Three things you will actually use

  1. Polarity: opposites are degrees of the same thing.
  2. Rhythm: every swing has a counter-swing; plan for it.
  3. Cause and effect: nothing escapes it.

Do this first

Read the polarity and rhythm chapters; they are the most psychologically useful.
