The Secret

by Rhonda Byrne

The 2006 phenomenon: the law of attraction, that thoughts attract like experiences, presented through quotations and testimonials. There is no scientific basis for the central claim and the implication that misfortune is attracted by the sufferer is harmful. What readers actually get from it, clarity about what they want and attention to it, is real and available without the metaphysics.

Read it if…

you want to understand the book everyone references; read it critically.

Skip it if…

you are looking for a reliable method; this is not one.

Three things you will actually use

  1. Clarity about desire focuses attention; that part works.
  2. Gratitude practice has evidence; attraction does not.
  3. Action is the missing chapter.

Do this first

Keep the exercise of writing clearly what you want; drop the belief that writing alone brings it.

Our verdict

Clarity yes; magic no.
