Educated

by Tara Westover

Westover grew up in a survivalist Idaho family, never attended school, suffered violence from a brother that her parents denied, and taught herself enough to enter Brigham Young, then Cambridge, then Harvard. The book is about education as the power to see your own life clearly, and the cost of that sight. Beautifully written and unresolved in the way true stories are.

Read it if…

you want a memoir about self-creation that does not pretend the past can be left behind cleanly.

Skip it if…

you want a triumphant arc; the ending is costly.

Three things you will actually use

  1. Education is learning to see for yourself.
  2. Loyalty and truth can conflict; choose consciously.
  3. You can love people and refuse their version of reality.

Do this first

Write one belief you inherited that you have never examined, and examine it.

Our verdict
