First Things First

by Stephen R. Covey

Covey's deep dive on his third habit: the four quadrants of urgency and importance, the weekly planning method built around roles and goals, and the argument that the clock should serve the compass. It is longer and more philosophical than most time books and more useful than many, if you do the weekly planning.

Read it if…

you have read The 7 Habits and want the time-management piece in full.

Skip it if…

you want tactics only; the book is principle-heavy.

Three things you will actually use

  1. Spend more time in Quadrant II, important but not urgent.
  2. Plan weekly, not daily.
  3. Put the big rocks in first.

Do this first

List your roles, set one goal per role for the week, and schedule the big rocks before anything else.

Our verdict

Thorough and principled; the weekly planning method is the keeper.
