Start

by Jon Acuff

Start is about the gap between the job you have and the work you want, and the five stages Acuff says every meaningful path passes through. It is more memoir and encouragement than system, written during his own leap from corporate work, and that uncertainty gives it honesty the later books polish away.

Read it if…

you are restless at work, know something needs to change and have not begun.

Skip it if…

you want tactical career advice; this is mostly nerve, not strategy.

Three things you will actually use

  1. Use the early morning; it is the only time nobody else owns.
  2. Expect fear to get louder as you get closer.
  3. Build the side path before you burn the main one.

Do this first

Spend thirty minutes before work tomorrow on the thing you keep saying you will do someday.

Our verdict

Encouraging and loose; good company for the first step, not the fiftieth.
