The 5 Love Languages
by Gary Chapman
Chapman's idea that people give and receive love in five main ways, words, time, gifts, service, touch, is simple, memorable and used by millions of couples. The research support is modest and the categories are blunt, but the practice of asking how your partner actually feels loved, rather than assuming, is valuable regardless.
Read it if…
you and your partner love each other and keep missing; this gives a shared vocabulary.
Skip it if…
you want research depth; the framework is a heuristic, and the author's religious framing is present.
Three things you will actually use
- Learn your partner's language, not yours.
- Act in their language weekly, deliberately.
- Notice complaints; they reveal the missing language.
Do this first
Ask your partner what made them feel most loved this month, and listen for the language.
Our verdict
Simple, popular and useful as a conversation starter.
