The Language of Emotions
by Karla McLaren
McLaren treats each emotion as a messenger with a question: anger asks what must be protected, fear asks what action is needed, sadness asks what must be released, with practices for working with each. It is empathic and somewhat esoteric in framing, and readers who learn to ask the questions find it changes their relationship to feeling.
Read it if…
you want to understand what each emotion is for rather than how to manage it.
Skip it if…
you want clinical psychology; the framing is intuitive and spiritual.
Three things you will actually use
- Every emotion carries information.
- Ask the emotion's question before acting.
- Suppression and expression are both ways of not listening.
Do this first
Next time you are angry, ask what needs protecting, and protect it appropriately.
Our verdict
Empathic and distinctive.
