Mindless Eating

by Brian Wansink

Experiments on how plate size, package size, lighting and labels change how much we eat: the bottomless soup bowl, the stale popcorn study. Note: Wansink later resigned after many papers were retracted for data problems, which casts doubt on specifics. The general insight that environment drives eating survives in others' work.

Three things you will actually use

  1. Environment shapes intake more than willpower.
  2. Smaller plates, smaller portions.
  3. Check the source; this one had problems.

Do this first

Use smaller plates for a week and see; it is a cheap test regardless.

Our verdict
