The 5 Second Rule
by Mel Robbins
The whole book is one trick: count backward from five and move before the brain talks you out of it. Robbins pads this with stories and emails from readers, and critics are right that it could be a long article. They are also wrong that the trick is trivial; for people whose problem is hesitation rather than knowledge, it works often enough to be worth the price.
Read it if…
you know exactly what you should do and stall at the moment of doing it.
Skip it if…
your problem is not hesitation but direction, skill or circumstances; counting does not fix those.
Three things you will actually use
- Use the count to get out of bed, speak up, start the task.
- Pair it with a specific action, not a feeling.
- Expect it to feel silly; do it anyway.
Do this first
Next time you catch yourself hesitating, count 5-4-3-2-1 and physically move on 1.
