Social Intelligence

by Daniel Goleman

Goleman's follow-up on the brain's wiring for connection: mirror neurons (overstated since), emotional contagion, rapport, the low road and high road of social cognition, and the effects of relationships on health. It is broad and sometimes diffuse; the practical lesson, that our moods and attention affect others physiologically, is well made.

Read it if…

you want the science of how people affect each other in rooms.

Skip it if…

you want a tight how-to; it wanders.

Three things you will actually use

  1. Emotions are contagious; you are broadcasting.
  2. Attention is the first gift of rapport.
  3. Relationships are biology, not just psychology.

Do this first

Notice your emotional effect on the next three people you speak with; adjust your pace and attention.

Our verdict

Broad and interesting.
