A spatula with a flexible edge can help scrape a mixing bowl or move batter into a pan. Match the utensil to the task and cookware, and follow both the spatula and cookware instructions. Do not assume every silicone tool has the same heat limit or is suitable for every surface.
Choose the right shape for the task
A broad edge can help scrape a larger bowl, while a smaller tool may reach into a jar. A spoon-shaped head may be useful for mixing. Select a spatula that fits the container without forcing it or bending the handle beyond its intended use.
Before cooking, check the utensil for splits, loose parts, or residue. If the head is detachable, make sure it is assembled securely according to the maker’s directions. Do not use a damaged tool.
Protect the pan and your hands
Check the cookware maker’s guidance for utensils, especially with coated or nonstick surfaces. Follow the spatula’s temperature limits, and do not leave it resting in a hot pan or near an open flame unless the instructions permit it. Use oven mitts when handling hot cookware.
For example, scrape batter from a bowl into a prepared pan with a few controlled strokes, keeping fingers away from the rim and hot surfaces. Use a utensil designed for stirring on the stovetop rather than leaving a tool in a pan unattended.
Keep raw and ready-to-eat foods separate
Use clean utensils for foods that are ready to eat, and wash a spatula between tasks when needed to prevent cross-contamination. Follow food-safety advice for raw ingredients. Do not return a utensil that touched raw food to a finished dish without cleaning it properly.
Set the spatula on a clean rest or plate instead of directly on a counter. Wipe spills promptly and keep the work area organized.
Wash and inspect the whole utensil
Follow the product instructions for dishwasher or hand washing. If the head separates, clean both the head and handle connection carefully and let parts dry before reassembly when directed. Avoid abrasive cleaners or soaking a handle material that should stay dry.
Inspect for cracks, discoloration that does not wash away, melted areas, or separation. Replace the utensil if damaged or difficult to clean. Store it away from sharp blades that could nick the silicone.
Check what the set includes
Check the current listing for sizes, materials, temperature limits, and care instructions. The referenced OXO set is described as three silicone spatulas; verify the selected version and its exact features before buying.
A single spatula you already own may cover most tasks. Add a set only if the different shapes solve a real need in your kitchen. Check whether the individual utensils are sold separately.
