You Do Not Need More Time. You Need a Decision.

“I just need more time” is the most common sentence in the vocabulary of the stuck, and it is almost never true. Look closely at a week that felt too short and you will usually find several hours that went to a very specific activity: not deciding. Circling the same question. Researching options you already understand. Reopening a choice that was settled last month. Indecision is not the absence of activity. It is a full-time job that pays nothing.

What Indecision Costs

An open decision is expensive in a way that does not show up on any calendar. It runs in the background of every other task, pulling attention, generating low-grade anxiety, and demanding to be revisited every time you have a quiet moment. One unmade decision can consume more energy over a month than the work it is blocking would take in a week. People feel this drain and diagnose it as a shortage of time. It is a shortage of closure.

Why We Avoid Deciding

Deciding means giving something up. Choose the job and you lose the other job. Choose the project and the other projects wait. As long as the decision is open, you have, in your imagination, all the options at once, and that feels richer than any single one of them. It is an illusion. In reality you have none of them, because none of them is being pursued. Indecision is the only choice that guarantees you get nothing.

How to Close It

Name the actual decision

Write it as one sentence with a question mark. Half of the time, seeing it written reveals that you already know the answer and have been avoiding the cost, not the choice.

Set a deadline measured in hours, not weeks

Most decisions do not improve with more information after a certain point; they only improve with more commitment. Give yourself until tomorrow at noon. Then decide with what you have.

Ask what you would tell a friend

You would tell them in thirty seconds. The clarity you have about other people’s choices is available for your own; it is just harder to hear over the noise of your own fear.

Decide, then stop reopening it

A decision that gets reconsidered every day was never made. Make it, write down why, and when the doubt returns, read the reason instead of relitigating the case.

What Happens to Your Week

The hour of circling goes away. The background hum goes quiet. The work that was blocked starts moving, and it moves faster than you expected, because it is no longer competing with an open question for your attention. You will discover that the time you needed was there all along. It was being spent on the decision you were not making.

Decide Today

Whatever you have been “needing more time” for, write it down as a question, give yourself until tomorrow, answer it the way you would for a friend, and do not reopen it. You were never short on hours. You were short on one sentence, and it is yours to say.
