Calm Under Pressure Is a Script You Have Heard Before
2 min read
Watch someone handle a crisis well and it looks like temperament. It is usually rehearsal. Pilots, surgeons, firefighters, negotiators: all of them have run the bad moment in training so many times that when it arrives for real, there is a script to follow. The calm is not the absence of fear. It is the presence of a next step.
Most of us have never rehearsed our hard moments. The difficult conversation, the hostile question, the phone call with bad news, the child screaming in the store. We meet them live, every time, with nothing prepared, and then wonder why we did not handle them better.

Identify your three moments
Not pressure in general; your specific recurring moments. The meeting where one person always pushes back. The drive home after a bad day, before you walk in the door. The email that arrives at five and ruins the evening. Write them down. You already know what they are.
Write what you do in each one
In your name, in the present tense, with the physical steps. “Omar, he interrupts. You stop. You breathe out. You say, ‘Let me finish, then I want to hear that.'” The script does not pretend the pressure is absent. It describes you, under the pressure, doing the next step.

Rehearse it when nothing is happening
Daily, on the commute, during a walk, as you fall asleep. The moment needs to become familiar before it is live. By the time the pushback happens, you have heard yourself handle it fifty times, and the fifty-first is just another repetition.
What this is not
It is not a treatment for anxiety, panic or trauma, and WisdomDeck is not a clinical provider. If your pressure moments bring on symptoms that frighten you, see a physician or a licensed therapist. Custom Audio is for the ordinary hard moments of competent adults who would like to handle them better.
